2008 Softball Canada Instructor/Evaluator Clinic

 

NORTH YORK, ONTARIO – Softball Ontario’s Umpires Program is thrilled to announce they are hosting Softball Canada’s Umpire Instructor/Evaluator in St. Thomas, ON on April 26-27, 2008.  Please note this clinic is being held at Elgin Labour Hall, 18 Princess Avenue, St. Thomas, ON N5R 3V2 and is the same location as the Softball Canada Level 4 Umpire clinic.   

This twelve (12) hour Softball Canada clinic focuses on how to be an effective Softball Canada Umpire Clinic Instructor and how to become a knowledgeable Softball Canada Umpire Evaluator.  This exciting educational opportunity will offer the following objectives: improve your quality of Umpire clinic instruction; develop your Evaluation techniques of On Field Evaluations and provide a national network of Softball Canada’s Instructor/Evaluators. Softball Canada's top notch Umpire Instructors for the Instructor/Evaluator Clinic include Brian Van Os, Softball Canada's Officials Development Committee, Coquitlan, BC and Murray Harvey, Softball Canada's Officials Development Committee, St. Thomas,ON.

In order to be eligible to attend the Softball Canada Instructor/Evaluator clinic hosted by Softball Ontario, you must be a fully certified Level 3 Softball Ontario Official.  Softball Ontario Level II   Umpires may be given consideration upon approval from the appropriate Provincial Umpire-in-Chief, Jack Van Bynen for Slo-Pitch Umpires and Peter Kluszczynski for Fast Pitch Umpires.  Please note approval is also required from Softball Canada National Director of Umpires, Bob Stanton.

Softball Ontario must recruit a minimum of twenty (20) participants by April 10, 2008 in order to host the 2007 clinic, so apply today!  If the minimum number of participants is not reached by April 10, the clinic will be cancelled.  Softball Ontario will continue to accept applications after the deadline providing the minimum of twenty (20) participants have registered.
 
Cost:   Member Fee:  $225.00 plus GST per participant 
           Non Member Fee: $275.00 plus GST per participant

Note:  Member means individual is a registered umpire with Softball Ontario in the current year or in the previous year.

Softball Ontario has reserved accommodations for clinic participants at Ramada St. Thomas, 292 Wellington Street, Hwy 3 Exit 1st Ave, St. Thomas, ON N5R 2S9, 519-631-2860 with a room rate of $89.00 plus applicable taxes.  It is the responsibility of participants who require accommodation to book their own accommodations.  Please note when making reservation, please quote 490 SOFT.

What to Bring: pen/pencil, paper, good attitude, a desire to learn. If you are planning on staying at the Edmonton Garrison for the Clinic/School that you will be required to bring your own towels and toiletries. This is just a bed and a place to sleep (dorm style facility located in Building 163)...not a hotel. Meal hall is just across the road from this building.
What to do if you want to go: contact your local UIC, who in turn will contact the ASUA UIC.
This clinic does not make you a certified evaluator/instructor. You must receive an evaluation as an instructor and as an evaluator to obtain a certified status. See Softball Canada ASUA Certified Evaluators / Instructors for details.

Overview
There are 2 primary components that are focused on in the training manual.

  1. How to become an effective clinic instructor/educator

  2. How to become a knowledgeable/effective umpire evaluator

Softball Canada will be the sole administrator and delivery agent of this National initiative. Members of the National Officiating Development Committee are responsible for the actual teaching, instructing and overall practical delivery of the material.

 Objectives

  1. Consistency in the quality of instruction.

  2. Consistency in the delivery of information.

  3. Up to date/modern umpire evaluators throughout Canada.

  4. Effective school/clinic instructors throughout Canada.

  5. Improvement of overall quality of instructors, evaluators and umpires.

 Guidelines

  1. The officiating development committee will accept expressions of interest from provinces to host "National Instructor and Evaluator Certification" clinics.

  2. There will be a minimum of 20 and maximum 50 participants required for each clinic. The clinic will be 1½ days or approximately 12 hours of instruction.

  3. There will be a registration fee of $150.00 per participant payable to Softball Canada 10 days before the event is scheduled. The host is responsible for the registration process and the submission of the names and participants/fees to Softball Canada on or before the designated deadline.   The registration form will be provided by Softball Canada and must be fully completed by participants.

  4. The cost of the facility, equipment, coffee etc. is the sole responsibility of the host.

  5. Softball Canada is responsible for the travel and accommodation of the instructors as well as the supply of the manuals/certificates, etc.

  6. Upon successful completion of this course the participant will receive a certificate indicating that the theory component was completed.

Certification

Master Instructor 

  1. A participant who has successfully passed the theory component of the "Instructor / Evaluator Certification Clinic" may attain full certification by being evaluated when instructing at a local umpire's clinic or school.

  2. A member of the National Officiating Development Committee or an individual appointed by the Director of Umpires will attend the clinic and make a subsequent recommendation based on established evaluation criteria. A $50 fee will be charged to those requesting evaluation and is payable to the evaluator.

  3. Full certification for Master Instructor status will be achieved as a result of a successful evaluation in the practical instructional application at this clinic and a positive recommendation to Softball Canada's Officiating Development Committee.

 Master Evaluator 

  1. A participant who has successfully passed the theory component of the "Instructor / Evaluator Certification Clinic" may attain full certification by being assessed performing evaluations at a tournament or at 3-5 games.

  2. A member of the National Officiating Development Committee or an individual appointed by the Director of Umpires will attend the tournament and make a subsequent recommendation based on established evaluation criteria.  A $50 fee will be charged to those requesting evaluation and is payable to the evaluator.

  3. Full certification for Master Evaluator status will be achieved as a result of a successful assessment of their evaluation skills and a positive recommendation to Softball Canada's Officiating Development Committee.
